Best Pregnancy Bra Australia: What Actually Supports You (Midwife Review)

For a lot of mummas, breast changes are the first real sign something’s happening before the test, before the appointment, before any of it feels real. And once it starts, it doesn’t slow down. By the second trimester, the bra that fit perfectly last month is digging in, riding up, or just plain wrong. This is your body doing exactly what it’s meant to, but it does mean your bra drawer needs a rethink.

Why Your Regular Bra Won’t Cut It

Breast tissue expands throughout pregnancy and into the fourth trimester, and a standard bra simply wasn’t built for that kind of change. What you actually need is something that:

  • Supports growing breast tissue through pregnancy and beyond
  • Skips the underwire and rigid cups that restrict natural fluctuation
  • Sets you up for easier breastfeeding, with lower risk of blocked ducts and mastitis
  • Uses breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that moves with your changing body temperature
  • Takes some of the load off your back, which is carrying more than it used to

The Real Benefits of a Properly Fitted Bra

A well-fitting maternity or nursing bra isn’t a nice-to-have   it does genuine work. Ellie (our midwife) sees the difference this makes daily: less neck and back tension, reduced stretching of breast tissue (which can help with sagging and stretch marks), and a much smoother start to breastfeeding once bub arrives.

Maternity, Nursing or Pregnancy Bra: What’s the Difference?

This is genuinely one of the most confusing purchases in pregnancy, so here’s what Ellie actually recommends.

  • Maternity bra   Built specifically for pregnancy, with wider straps, softer lining and extra hook-and-eye rows to grow with you. Usually underwire-free. Good for pregnancy only; not designed for feeding access.
  • Nursing bra   Similar comfort and support, but with cups that unclip downward for feeding. Best suited to postpartum rather than pregnancy itself.
  • Pregnancy bra: The one that does both jobs. All the support of a maternity bra, plus nursing clips, so it carries you from bump to breastfeeding in a single purchase. If you’re only buying one type, this is usually the most worthwhile.
  • Pumping bra   Designed to hold pump attachments in place for hands-free expressing. Comes as bras, bustiers or clip-on attachments, depending on what fits your routine.

What to Look for When You’re Buying

  • Breathable fabric: cotton and silk regulate temperature far better than polyester
  • Adjustable band and straps   your size will keep changing, and your bra needs to keep up
  • No underwire   too restrictive for fluctuating breast tissue
  • Soft cup lining   protects sensitive nipples, especially once feeding starts
  • More than one: hygiene matters once you’re breastfeeding, so budget for a few

Ellie’s advice: get fitted professionally where you can   once around 16–20 weeks, and again closer to your due date for a nursing bra, since your size at 20 weeks won’t be your size at term.
